PhD thesis title Shape-changing 3D-Printed Origami CubeSats for Near-Earth Asteroid Proximity Operations Abstract Near-Earth Asteroids(NEAs) are rich in valuable commodities and their usage represents an ambitious challenge. Future asteroid missions will require novel and unconventional engineering solutions to meet a range of open technical problems.
This project aims at advancing next generation of space robotic missions to NEAs by using low-cost shape-changing origami CubeSats that can re-configure to perform different mission tasks. Past and recent theoretical studies have demonstrated that reflective deployable structures could allow for spacecraft’s orbit control or transfer. We propose a change in the local reflectivity of origami membranes to trigger shape reconfiguration of a flat surface. This could open mission scenarios where a shape-changing origami CubeSat can accomplish several tasks. For example, an origami CubeSat capable to change shape could adapt by behaving as a spacecraft when in orbit and re-configure as a rover when landing. This approach is in contrast to traditional asteroid missions where Large(L-) Class monolithic spacecraft are used, with the disadvantage of being highly costly ($200M) and requiring decades of development time (i.e. few launch opportunities).
The outcome of the project will be to estimate the design drivers in term of changes in the area-to-mass ratio of the 3D-printed origami CubeSat and its prototype."

Vasilis’ research expertise pertains to the development and evaluation of earthquake-resilient steel and steel-concrete composites structural systems, devices and connections, mainly for buildings and bridges. His research interests lie in the field of the response of structures to extreme loads (i.e., earthquakes, typhoons/hurricanes/strong winds, impacts, tsunamis, blasts, etc.), with a particular focus on the resilience- and performance-based earthquake and wind engineering. His research vision focuses on integrating state-of-the-art structural modelling (e.g., for cyclic metal plasticity, fracture, damping and buckling), “Green materials” (e.g., high-strength and stainless steels, Glued laminated timber (Glulam), Cross-laminated timber (CLT), etc.), advanced computational techniques and experimental results into a coherent framework for the (a) performance evaluation of existing structural systems with the aim to improve them (structural upgrade); and (b) development and design of novel structural systems that intend to satisfy the global priorities and demands of modern societies for multi-hazard resilience (e.g., Resilience-based Design (RBD) and community resilience) and sustainability (e.g., “Green Construction”) within the built environment.
As a young academic and researcher, Vasilis has currently published seven journal and conference papers and currently working on his research aiming to submit four journal papers within 2021.

Brief Introduction:
Dr. Theofilis’ research interests lie in the prediction and control of fluid flow instabilities at all speed regimes. In particular, he specialises in the areas of global linear and nonlinear instability of flows with multiple inhomogeneous spatial directions and the associated numerical solution of large eigenvalue and initial-value problems governing small-amplitude disturbances in such flows. Applications of current interest include attached and separated three-dimensional boundary layer flows, vortex systems in the wake of three-dimensional wings, flow over aircraft fuselages and submarines, supersonic flow over compression ramps and hypersonic flows over elliptic cone and double-cone geometries, including instability analysis of shock-wave / boundary-layer interaction and hypersonic laminar-turbulent transition. In addition, flow over quasi-spherical surfaces are of current interest, where novel numerical methods for the accurate and efficient treatment of surface imperfections are being developed and applied to the human eye cornea. NTHU colleagues with research interests in any of the above general areas are sought, with the aim to form a joint PhD project according to the dual agreement programme.
